As a safety professional, I had heard vaping was a “gateway drug” which means that it leads users towards more serious drug abuse. I wondered if that was a true statement.
So I discussed the topic with a Long Island (NY) student and I asked him about vaping habits he has witnessed within his high school:
-Who does it more, the boys or girls? (Answer- The boys)
-What % of the kids do it? (Answer – A lot)
-What does the school do about the problem? (Answer – Security guards search the bathrooms)
-Have the coaches discussed with the student athletes the reasons not to start vaping? (Answer – Yes)
But then, the issue of whether vaping is a gateway drug was definitively answered for me. I asked, “Where do teens get the stuff you need to vape if they are not old enough in New York State to buy it?” and he responded matter of factly, “They buy it from the kids who deal drugs in our high school.”
