I joined ASSP in 1987 when I graduated college and started my first job. I did not know anyone, although the group was warm and friendly. I imagine that you and your friend, Howard Edelson were there on that day. Even though I don’t remember specifically, I feel as if I you were at almost every meeting I have ever attended.
Our paths “safely” crossed and we became friends. Over the years, I drove Howard to a number of the meetings and we often sat all together enjoying each others company. You were a dedicated member of our association and volunteered to be the chapter historian, both officially and unofficially, and also served as our chapter’s webmaster.
As your friend, I was treated to stories of your family, career and hobbies. If I was lucky you had pictures of your precious car or the grandchildren to share with me. I always thought how lucky your grandkids were to have a grandfather (“Opa”) like you.
We grieved together when Howard passed away and missed him at all of the following meetings. I never remembered my name tag anymore without him to remind me to put it on as we drove to the meeting.
As our chapter turns 35 (Is it really 35?, How is this possible?), we need to realize that our chapter’s existence is due to both the work of the founders and the former members.
We must keep our chapter strong, by listening to each other and sharing our knowledge and experiences at every opportunity. On this anniversary, we should put down our cell phones, meet new attendees, toast the future of our chapter and celebrate the history we have shared.
Werner, we will miss you, but also will be comforted by knowing that Howard is already saving you a seat in heaven.
